This survey is the ninth conducted by the Institute for Public Opinion Research in Bratislava, which served as a department of the Ministry of Information from 1947 to 1950. The survey covers a wide range of topics (resolving international tensions, the potential impact of international conflict on respondents’ lives, reading of daily newspapers and weeklies, opinions on newspaper columns, writing to the press, views on Czechs and Slovaks as branches or separate nations, choice of bedroom type based on pictures). SASD provides a reconstruction of the survey results, compiled based on final reports intended for state authorities and the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Slovakia. Neither the data nor the original questionnaire are available; SASD provides a reconstruction of the questions used in the questionnaire, and the basic research results, transcribed into an Excel file, are accessible online. The research was conducted using a purposive sample selection to correspond as closely as possible to the estimated structure of the population of Slovak society at that time. Since this was the postwar period and the last nationwide census was in 1930, with the next one not until 1950, it was not possible to use quota sampling. However, the nature of the sample suggests that the sample selection corresponded in several respects to the structure of Slovak society at the time of the survey, which was closest to the 1950 census.

The survey was designed to capture the diversity of the population in Slovakia in terms of gender, occupation, age, nationality, and religious affiliation.
The survey was conducted through face-to-face interviews by approximately 200 external interviewers from the institute, most of whom worked as educational and cultural workers in Slovakia. The interviewers were trained on the research methodology in writing and through informational brochures. The interviewers received the questionnaires by mail along with instructions on what types of respondents to seek out in their local areas. The interviewers returned the completed questionnaires by mail.
