Identification Number: SASD 1948002
Author: Institute for Public Opinion Research in Bratislava
Date of collection: 1948-04-22 to 1948-05-22
Data collector: Institute for Public Opinion Research in Bratislava
Sampling procedure: Intentional, attempting to capture the diversity of the population in Slovakia in terms of gender, type of employment, age, and religious affiliation. The research was carried out through in-person interviews by approximately 200 external interviewers of the institute, most of whom worked as educational and cultural officers in Slovakia. The interviewers were trained in the research procedure in writing and through informational brochures. They received the questionnaires by mail together with instructions on what kinds of respondents they should seek out in their area. The completed questionnaires were then mailed back by the interviewers. Respondents of Hungarian nationality were not included in the research.
Number of cases: 0

Abstract: The research is the second study conducted by the Institute for Public Opinion Research in Bratislava, which was the workplace of the Information Commission in 1947-1950. The research covers a wide range of topics, including the black market, punishment for profiteering, the rationing system, the two-year plan, compulsory insurance, simplification of spelling, and church and state schools. SASD provides a reconstruction of the research results, compiled on the basis of final reports intended for state authorities and the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Slovakia. Neither the data nor the original questionnaire are available, but SASD provides a reconstruction of the questions used in the questionnaire, and the basic results of the research are available online in an Excel file. The research was carried out using a purposeful sample selection to reflect as accurately as possible the estimated structure of the population of Slovak society at that time. As this was the post-war period and the last nationwide census was in 1930, with the next one not until 1950, it was not possible to use quota sampling. However, the nature of the sample indicates that the sample selection corresponded in several respects to the structure of Slovak society at the time of the research closest to the 1950 census.
