Data Data catalogue A culture of coexistence of inhabitants of nationally mixed areas of southern Slovakia study description | list of variables | data access Identification Number: SASD 2007002 Author: Národné osvetové centrum Date of collection: 2007-09-01 to 2007-09-30 Data collector: Sampling procedure: Quota sampling Number of cases: 825 Abstract: The survey followed on a survey conducted in 2001 which focused on mapping the relationships in the coexistence of the Slovak majority and members of the Hungarian minority in linguistically mixed areas of southern Slovakia. This was, to some extent, a comparative survey, complemented with additional questions. Survey questions were mainly aimed at satisfaction with the relationships of Slovaks and Hungarians in selected locations, equal treatment of both nationalities by state authorities, representation of both nationalities in local governments, possibilities of cultural leisure at events presented in individual languages and possibilities for education in native languages. The level of command of the official language as well as a minority language and foreign languages as such were examined as well. Further questions dealt with the level of influence of representatives of political parties and diocesan authorities on relations between the people of Slovak and Hungarian nationality, identifying causes of the perception of unequal status within the Hungarian minority, and identifying the main economic and social issues in lives of people living in ethnically mixed regions of Slovakia. A group of questions concentrated on ways and possibilities of cultivating the national consciousness of both nations, following the media in individual languages, and surveying the level of satisfaction with the representation of both nationalities in local governments. The survey was extended by a set of questions aimed at identifying the frequency of doing selected leisure activities. Respondents' active participation in cultural organizations was also examined, together with triggers of the feeling of discrimination. The final questions dealt with the use of one of the languages at home and surveyed which language was used at individual school types the respondent attended and whether their children study in the same language while also specifying the reasons for choosing studies in this language. The survey was conducted in ethnically mixed districts of southern Slovakia on a sample of 821 respondents represented reciprocally by citizens of Slovak and Hungarian nationality using the basic quota characteristics (gender, age, education, residence, district, region as well as religious denomination, and economic status).
