Data Data catalogue Public opinion research in Slovakia - Research No. 11 (May 1949) study description | list of variables | data access Identification Number: SASD 1949004 Author: Public Opinion Research Institute in Bratislava, Office of Information Date of collection: 1948-04-19 to 1948-05-19 Data collector: Public Opinion Research Institute in Bratislava Sampling procedure: The survey was designed to capture the diversity of the population in Slovakia in terms of gender, occupation, age, nationality, and religious affiliation. The survey was conducted through face-to-face interviews by approximately 200 external interviewers from the institute, most of whom worked as educational and cultural workers in Slovakia. The interviewers were trained on the research methodology in writing and through informational brochures. The interviewers received the questionnaires by mail along with instructions on what types of respondents to seek out in their local areas. The interviewers returned the completed questionnaires by mail. Number of respondents: 1,190 Number of cases: 0 Abstract: This is the 11th survey conducted by the Institute for Public Opinion Research in Bratislava, which served as a branch of the Information Commission from 1947 to 1950. The study covers a wide range of topics, including changes in attitudes toward work, suggestions for improvement, views on the JRD, improvements in supply, the purchase of livestock products, shortages in the supply of textiles and footwear, the Hviezdoslav Fund, expectations of war, views on the alliance treaty with Hungary, and the need for a positive attitude of the churches toward the establishment of the state). SASD provides a reconstruction of the research results, compiled on the basis of final reports intended for state authorities and the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Slovakia (ÚV KSS). Neither the data nor the original questionnaire are available; SASD provides a reconstruction of the questions used in the questionnaire, and the basic research results are available online in an Excel file. The research was conducted using a purposive sample selection to correspond as closely as possible to the estimated structure of the population of Slovak society at the time. Since this was the postwar period and the last nationwide census had been conducted in 1930, with the next one not until 1950, it was not possible to use quota sampling. However, the nature of the sample suggests that the sample selection corresponded in several respects to the structure of Slovak society at the time of the survey, which was closest to the 1950 census.
