Abstract: The survey is a part of a cycle of surveys that were run on the initiative of the Government Office of the Slovak Republic and namely the Ministry of Culture of the Slovak Republic. The original objective of the survey was aimed at 'The use of youth leisure time to prevent addictions'. Due to an increase in extreme manifestations of racial intolerance and xenophobia among the youth, the survey questionnaire was later extended by questions focusing on the attitudes of young people towards manifestations of extremism. The cooperation with The Centre for Information on Literature has led to the expansion within the module of questions mapping the level of interest young people have in literature, i.e. reading fiction, academic literature, magazines, watching media programs, the internet, etc. This survey focused primarily on establishing how much selected leisure activities are done, mapping conditions and possibilities to do these activities in the close vicinity of the respondent's residence, and determining the circumstances or persons that prevent the optimal use of leisure time. The questionnaire also included questions on respondents' level of participation at local cultural events. Another set of questions focused on young people's experience with addictive substances, namely the frequency of alcohol use, smoking, slot machines, trying drugs, or more frequent use of drugs. The survey also set out to identify information sources on addictive substances and their effects and establish how effective the awareness of precautionary measures is in young people. The final part of the study was formed by questions examining the attitudes of young people towards life as such, and respondents' assessment of their life situations. Special questions were asked to determine the degree of effectiveness of individual forms of advertising dedicated to promoting the resolution of negative phenomena in society as well as the possible involvement of young respondents in certain areas. The survey was performed on a sample of young respondents (16 - 18 years old) attending the second or third grade of the most frequent types of secondary schools (grammar schools, business schools, medical schools, hotel schools, vocational schools, and conservatories). The sample size was 1316 respondents representing all eight regions of Slovakia.
